A View From The Bridge

Transfer News: Newcastle United in talks to loan ‘desperate’ Chelsea star

Transfer News: Newcastle United interested in a loan deal for Chelsea’s Timo Werner

According to the Mirror (h/t Express), Newcastle United are in talks with Chelsea involving a loan deal for Timo Werner. This comes amid claims that linked Werner with a move back to RB Leipzig this summer.

Werner has had a turbulent time ever since moving to Stamford Bridge. The 26-year-old German has been inconsistent in front of goal and has now found himself on the fringes of Thomas Tuchel’s starting XI. A move back to Germany was said to be on the cards, but that could change.

Both the interested parties are unprepared to pay the striker’s wages, which are estimated to be around £270,000 per week, according to The Mirror. Perhaps either Werner taking a pay cut or Chelsea helping out with the wages could be a potential solution.

The German has failed to live up to the big price tag that Chelsea paid for him in 2020. He has managed to score just 23 goals for the Blues in 89 appearances in all competitions.

Newcastle will hope that they can land the striker as he is desperate to be a success in the Premier League. It is believed that Chelsea will insist on a clause that the deal be made permanent at the end of the season.

The Magpies, backed by their new owners’ funds, will hope to land a European spot at the end of next season. Werner’s departure would leave Tuchel with Armando Broja and Michy Batshuayi as the other strikers in the team.

Broja is desperate to be given a chance while the latter is clearly not preferred by those at Chelsea. Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz are the two other options to play down the middle, but they aren’t natural centre-forwards.

A loan deal would benefit all parties. Chelsea will hope that a season away from the Bridge can help Werner regain his Bundesliga form. As for Werner, he would love to get more playing time as he would like to be in the Germany squad for the FIFA World Cup in November.

The striker is apparently ‘desperate’ to prove himself in England and hence, a temporary move to St James’ Park can make sense for him. The Toons are not a threat to Chelsea in the PL table, at least for now.

The earlier this deal gets sorted, the better. It would be best for all parties to know what to expect in the new season. Werner can then start planning for life in the Bundesliga while the Blues would understand the void left in their attack by Romelu Lukaku and potentially Werner’s loan departures.

Whether they then choose to fill it by scouring the transfer market is anyone’s guess.
