Newcastle United are said to be interested in signing Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi this summer, according to Football.London. The Magpies are said to be in constant contact with the Blues regarding the winger.
A Chelsea academy product, Hudson-Odoi was promoted to the senior team in 2019. But ever since Thomas Tuchel’s appointment as coach, the England international has struggled to get minutes. Now he could be on the move.
He managed to make only 15 appearances in the league last season, playing his last game in January in a 2-0 victory over London rivals Tottenham Hotspur. He was out of the squad due to injury and that did little to help his chances of regular playtime.
Although he failed to get minutes, there is no such intention to sell the Englishman from the club’s side. The club has already seen players like Romelu Lukaku, Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger depart. There is also a possibility that Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic could leave.
Should they all leave, there will be no natural winger left in the team. Chelsea are linked with Raheem Sterling and Raphinha, with the former very likely to join the Blues. This could be Odoi’s chance to impress Tuchel.
With pre-season to begin soon, Odoi could showcase his talent to impress the German and secure a place in the team. A talented player, he can play on both sides of the wings and also as an attacking midfielder. At just 21 years of age, he still has the potential to become one of the best in the world.
However, if Tuchel is still unimpressed, he should consider loaning him out rather than selling him. Perhaps a loan move will showcase Odio’s true talent, giving Tuchel time to assess him as a potential starter under him. Tuchel should only make this decision about Hudson-Odoi, after giving him a chance during pre-season and seeing all the options available to him for next season.
It remains to be seen what happens. Tuchel and Chelsea should consider making moves in the market now, or they would be too late which could cost them heavily next season.
