Levi Colwill is looking very likely to leave Chelsea this summer, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano (h/t football.london). He could leave on a permanent transfer amid growing interest in the young Chelsea defender.
A Chelsea youth graduate, the 19-year-old’s future looks uncertain as Thomas Tuchel is planning to bring in three world-class defenders to west London. And now Romano has confirmed that the England Under-21 is likely to leave this summer.
Colwill spent last season on loan at Championship side Huddersfield where he excelled. The Chelsea man was phenomenal as he helped the Terriers reach the final of the Championship play-offs, which they lost to Nottingham Forest. The player has gained the attention of clubs like Southampton, Arsenal and Leicester City, who are willing to take him off Chelsea’s hand.
The 19-year-old was already a loan target for many of the clubs, but with Chelsea said to be pursuing three centre-backs in Kalidou Koulibaly, Nathan Ake and Presnel Kimpembe; Colwill’s path to the senior team is effectively blocked. This could lead to the player looking for alternatives as he is keen to play regularly.
Once compared to Chelsea legend John Terry in the past, it is looking very less likely that he will stay. Colwill is currently in the United States with the squad for their pre-season tour. This could serve as a perfect opportunity for the young man who will look forward to impressing his coach and include himself in his plans for next season.
Tuchel would be wise to assess the player first and then decide on his future. At just 19, Colwill has a lot to learn and is full of potential. It would be safe for the club to convince him to go out on loan and not sell him on a permanent transfer if he fails to make it to Tuchel’s plans.
Colwill played 29 times for Huddersfield last season and amassed huge playing experience under his belt. If they can convince him to go out on loan again, the Blues could assess his performance much better and then decide to make him part of their squad. The 19-year-old’s current contract runs till 2025.
If Colwill can manage to make the squad for next season or the season after that, he could be one to look out for. At such a young age, if he managed to be a starter for Chelsea in the next couple of years, he could potentially lead the backline for many years.
The Blues fans will love nothing more than to see their own youth player start games for the club- granted that he is good enough.
