Transfer News: Chelsea are set to complete the signing of Tyler Dibling from Southampton
Chelsea continue to improve their academy this summer and are set to complete the signing of Tyler Dibling. The Southampton youngster will move to Cobham for a £1.5 million fee, according to Fabrizio Romano via Twitter.
Dibling will not be the first such youngster to join Chelsea from Southampton. He will join his fellow team-mate Eddie Beach who joined the Blues last month. Chelsea have also signed Zak Sturge from Brighton & Hove Albion and Omari Hutchinson from Arsenal this summer.
An attacking midfielder, Dibling is a youth product of the Southampton academy. The midfielder enjoyed a fruitful campaign last season where he had eight goals and five assists in 22 games for the Under-18 and Under-21 sides.
The England Under-17 international makes a fine addition to the talent already present in Chelsea’s youth system. While Thomas Tuchel struggles to add players to his first team, adding players to the academy is of less concern.
An attacking midfielder by trade, he can also play on both sides of the wings. With such versatility, talent and potential he could be one to look out after. It is very unlikely that he will be made part of the first-team squad, but consistent performances at the youth level could lead to a call-up by Tuchel.
Tuchel’s midfield plate is currently full. N’Golo Kante and Jorginho are still at the top of their game, but they are not getting any younger. Mateo Kovacic and Conor Gallagher are giving tough competition to become regular starters. Dibling will need to show an extraordinary talent for Tuchel to consider choosing him over such quality midfielders.
Apart from this, Tuchel would surely be looking to add a centre-back to his team. There is a dire need to fix the defensive hole at Stamford Bridge with the new season knocking on the door. It will be wise for Chelsea to not spend money on any player but to consider their priorities carefully.
