Transfer News: Chelsea target Ousmane Dembele closing in on Barcelona contract renewal

According to popular Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele is closing in on a contract renewal with the Spanish giants amidst transfer interest from Chelsea.

Chelsea’s interest in Ousmane Dembele has been prevalent for quite some time now, with the talented French winger failing to pen a new deal with the Catalan club to date. However, things are about to change with the 25-year-old having agreed to all the clauses in Barcelona’s contract offer.

A very talented player who can on his day tear apart any defence in the world, it has taken some time for the whole world to see Dembele’s potential. After years of disappointment, it finally looks like the Frenchman turned over a leaf in the past six months.

Dembele joined Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 in a move that generated a lot of hype and expectation but was largely disappointing for the first four years. Injuries were a constant menace in Dembele’s progress, not allowing him to exhibit his original abilities.

This season too, he was injured for the most part for the first half of the season due to an injury he suffered during the Euros. However, he became an integral part of Xavi Hernandez’s team and put in some truly exceptional performances for the Garnet and Blue.

The 25-year-old winger played 32 games for the Spanish giants this season scoring two goals and providing thirteen assists across all competitions. He is truly a winger who can create and score- and would be an asset for any team in the world.

Having previously worked with him during their time at Dortmund, it comes as no surprise that Thomas Tuchel wanted him at Chelsea. The German tactician knows exactly what Dembele is capable of and also knows how to use the French World cup winner.

Dembele, especially on a free, would have been a great signing for the Blues. He would have offered something very different to what we have in our squad and could have been a great signing considering his blistering pace and playmaking skills.

However, it does not seem like this deal is going to happen. If Dembele renews with Barcelona, there is no way the Catalan giants would then want to lose him for cheap. This is a way for them to regain control over the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner’s future.

Regardless, this is a saga that has dragged on for quite some time now. We may not be getting Dembele and if the new contract is signed, we can make our peace with it.
