Transfer News: Chelsea beat off interest from five top clubs for Raheem Sterling
According to the Mirror, Chelsea beat off interest from five top European super clubs to agree on terms with Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool were the clubs in the fray for the Englishman.
It was Thomas Tuchel’s personal touch and detailed conversations with the player that convinced Sterling to agree to join Chelsea and start a new chapter in his career. The England international is expected to make a £45 million move to Stamford Bridge.
Sterling joined City from Liverpool in 2015 for £44million, making him the then most expensive English player. He has only gone and justified the price tag by scoring 131 goals and notching up 94 assists for the Cityzens in 337 appearances in all competitions, winning the Premier League four times.
But he has now fallen down the pecking order at City and this has seemingly led to him wanting to leave to get regular playing time elsewhere. And it seems Chelsea are the answer to his wishes.
First signing of the new era?
The Blues are yet to make a signing this summer. But that could soon be over as Sterling could become the first signing not only of this summer but also the first of many for the new Boehly-Clearlake administration.
Tuchel has been revamping the entire squad and has seen his striker Romelu Lukaku leave. Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech are also tipped to leave the club. Sterling, under such circumstances, would be a phenomenal signing.
A right-winger by trade, Sterling can play on the left side and also as a number nine when required. This trait could allow him to play anywhere up front in Tuchel’s 3-4-2-1 system. He makes things happen in the final third and fans would know how good he is when it comes to getting into the box to be at the end of passes squared in from the byline.
Apart from all this, he is already a proven player in the league and also has spent time in Queens Park Rangers academy for two years. A London boy, moving to Chelsea would also move him closer to the place he grew up in.
Sterling’s move to Stamford Bridge will also help him potentially get more playing time. This would help him to cement his place further in Gareth Southgate’s England squad, as he is very likely to go to Qatar this November.
