According to popular Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Chelsea are edging closer to signing talented Serie A defender Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli with a deal for the Italian said to be a matter of time.
The Blues have been interested in signing the talented centre-back for some time now and it now looks like the deal has really accelerated in recent times. Koulibaly has now accepted that Chelsea is his next possible destination upon consulting with his agent.
One of the best defenders in Serie A, it is very surprising that Koulibaly has been at Napoli for as long as he has. The Senegalese man joined the club from Genk in 2014 and has gone on to become a legend of the Italian club in his own right.
A natural leader at the back, Koulibaly has led the Napoli team with his exceptional performances. In his eight years at the Italian club, the Senegalese superstar’s performances have always been consistent and there can be no doubt about his commitment.
This season has been no different for Koulibaly with the 31-year-old leading Naples with his performances in both the Champions League and Serie A. The Senegalese defensive ace played 34 times for Luciano Spaletti’s side scoring three goals and providing three assists across all competitions.
With a move now looking imminent to Chelsea, the Senegalese finally seems to be getting the big move that he deserved throughout his career. He comes to the Blues at a time where he can definitely be the leader of our backline and become a huge player for us.
Chelsea’s dearth of centre-backs is absolutely no secret now and signing Koulibaly might just be the best short-term fix. The Senegalese man has the experience required to command a Blues backline and it could not have happened at a better time for either party.
Although we can be overjoyed about the signing of Koulibaly when it goes through, we need to remember that the Senegalese man is 31 and we also have Thiago Silva who is 37 years old. Whilst these two can still offer a lot, it would be best if our next centre-back signing is young.
That is an issue to worry about for the future and right now, we can be happy that we are finally closing in on a move for a centre-back. Koulibaly to Chelsea, hopefully very soon!
