Transfer News: Benjamin Pavard will be open to joining Chelsea this summer
Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard is said to be open to the opportunity to join Chelsea this summer, according to journalist Christian Falk of BILD on Twitter.
Thomas Tuchel’s desire to get in another centre-back at the club is well known. Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen leaving as free agents has compounded the club’s problems in defence.
Pavard, meanwhile, is said to be open to a move and Chelsea could consider making a serious offer. The 26-year-old World Cup winner would make a fine addition to Chelsea for next season.
Pavard moved to the German champions in 2019 from VfB Stuttgart and has established himself as an important player in the team. A regular starter, the defender has had a wonderful time in the Bavarian club winning the league for the third time last season.
A right-back by trade, Pavard is capable of operating in all defensive positions. Such a versatility is something that Tuchel prefers for his 3-4-2-1 formation. He could help provide back-up to Reece James or be deployed as a centre-back.
Apart from this he will help increase the depth of the team and also increase competition. A serial winner, he would be moving from one winning team to another. Tuchel and co would be wise to make a move for him.
The arrival of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui to Bayern could threaten Pavard’s place in the team. Moreover, Pavard’s versatility could also make him an appropriate replacement for Cesar Azpilicueta, who is linked with a move to Barcelona.
At just 26, the French international could potentially spend his prime years at Stamford Bridge. Considering how hard it is to find a top-quality centre-back, Pavard could be a diamond in a coal mine.
