Transfer News: Barcelona move for Cesar Azpilicueta not imminent
According to @gerardromero via @ReshadRahmam [h/t Football. London], Barcelona’s pursuit of Cesar Azpilicueta is far from imminent with details yet to be finalised on the deal for the Chelsea veteran.
Barcelona is being a thorn in Chelsea’s transfer plans this summer. They have already signed Andreas Christensen from us and are interested in signing both Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso. They are also trying to hijack our pursuit of Raphinha from Leeds United.
That the Spanish giants want to sign Azpilicueta is no new news. Barcelona have been after the Spanish veteran for quite some time now and after it seemed like the interest had cooled down, things have started resurfacing with respect to this deal.
Azpilicueta is undoubtedly one of the greatest players to wear the Chelsea shirt in the 21st century. He has been our captain for some time now and has been an exceptional player during his 10 years with us at Stamford Bridge. He now looks set to move on for pastures new.
The ultimate professional, Azpilicueta plays anywhere the coach wants him to play and the best part is that he plays all the roles with equal effort and dedication. His performances have been largely consistent in a Blues shirt and his consistency is incredible.
Even this season, the Spaniard was often forced to play out of position due to a long-term injury that Reece James suffered and yet, Azpilicueta managed to do the role exceptionally well. In 47 games for Thomas Tuchel’s side this season, the veteran has scored three goals and provided three assists.
After ten years at Stamford Bridge having won everything that is there to win in this period, at 32, it is not surprising to see Azpilicueta wanting a new challenge. His next move is likely to be his last big one and it looks like he wants to return to his home country and play for the powerhouse there.
In an ideal situation, for everything that Azpilicueta has done for us, one would think that letting him leave on his own terms is the fair thing to do. But with our problems at the back, especially related to a lack of personnel, things can get sticky.
