Napoli thinking about making an offer to Chelsea for backup goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga
Napoli are considering making an offer for Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga according to Sky Sports via Napoli Report (h/t football.london). The Spaniard has become the backup for the Blues following the arrival of Edouard Mendy.
The Parthenopeans are keeping a close eye on the 27-year-old’s situation at Stamford Bridge. Arrizabalaga hasn’t featured in many games for Chelsea since the end of the 2019/20 season.
The Blues are supposedly open to a loan move for the player. The goalkeeper also seems keen to leave Stamford Bridge and try a new challenge elsewhere.
Arrizabalaga signed for the Blues in 2018 after Chelsea paid his hefty release clause to Athletic Bilbao. The goalkeeper came with high expectations and had a decent debut season, although he did make some errors.
The 27-year-old’s debut season saw him put then-manager Maurizio Sarri in an awkward position when he refused to be substituted in the Carabao Cup final. The Italian is now, of course, the manager of Napoli.
Kepa has become the backup
Frank Lampard decided to trust Arrizabalaga during the 2019/20 campaign. But the goalkeeper didn’t cover himself in any glory. Fans felt the Spaniard made too many Errors in goal.
Mendy showed the fans what they were missing in between the sticks. The Senegalese has been one of our best players over the last two seasons. The former Rennes goalkeeper made the position his own.
Since then, Arrizabalaga has struggled for game time. The 27-year-old has featured in just 31 games over the last two seasons. Most of his appearances have come in domestic cup competitions.
