A View From The Bridge

Chelsea stars to get new contracts as new owners seek to address imbalance

Mason Mount and Reece James are in line for new Chelsea contracts

The new ownership of Chelsea, the consortium led by Todd Boehly was shocked when they went through the books of the club and saw players like Mason Mount and Reece James at the lower end of the pay scale. Now they wish to rectify this imbalance, as reported by The Telegraph (subscription required).

Apart from them, Edouard Mendy is also in the line to get a new contract. He currently earns less than half of his understudy Kepa Arrizabalaga. This news will come as a major boost for the players mentioned and also Thomas Tuchel who is currently in the United States with the squad for pre-season.

Both Mount and James are Chelsea youth products. They spent some time on loan before their promotion to the team in 2019. They played pivotal roles during the 2020/21 campaign when the west London outfit won the Champions League under Tuchel.

Mason Mount is set to be awarded a new contract.

Mount has gone from strength to strength every season at Stamford Bridge. The England international had a phenomenal last season, where he managed to score 11 goals and notch up 10 assists in 32 league appearances. Apart from this, he produced one of his best performances against Real Madrid in the second leg of the quarter-finals of the Champions League, where he scored one and assisted another, only for the team to crash out after extra time.

As for James, he has established himself as one of the best right-backs in the world. He missed a few games in the middle of last season, due to injury. But apart from them, he showed his quality in every game he played. In his 26 league appearances, he scored five goals and assisted nine more as the Blues finished third in the table. But perhaps his most notable game was the second leg against Real Madrid, where James walked out with the appreciation from everyone at the Santiago Bernabeu.

It is very less surprising to see the owners wanting to show their appreciation to the Cobham products who have given their everything for the badge. It was rather surprising to know that players who don’t contribute much to the team, were getting paid more than the people who deserved it.

Reece James has established himself as one the best right-backs in the world.

With the team currently away in the States for pre-season, it is very less likely that they will renew their contracts there. Hopefully, by next month the club announces their renewal and they are paid what they deserve. Both the players are in their early 20s and are yet to reach their full potential.

More Chelsea News:

Having already established themselves as regular starters for the club, the fans would love to see their local stars continue to perform for years to come. They are not only heroes on the pitch, but off too as they inspire a new generation of starlets to come through the youth system.
