Juventus reject Bayern Munich bid for Chelsea target Matthijs de Ligt
According to Sport Bild’s Christian Falk on Twitter (h/t Football. London), Chelsea have received a welcome boost in their pursuit of talented Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt with Juventus rejecting the first bid made by Bayern Munich for their star man.
Chelsea and Bayern Munich are fighting it out for the signature of Juventus centre-back Matthijs de Ligt with the player seemingly closer to a move to the Bundesliga club than the Blues. However, the German club’s first bid has been turned down and this will be music to the ears of Chelsea.
De Ligt is one of the most talented young defenders in the world. After initially struggling to adapt to Italian football, the talented Dutchman has really settled in to become one of the best defenders in Serie A over the past couple of seasons.
De Ligt joined Juventus from Ajax in 2019 on the back of an extremely impressive campaign with the Eredivisie giants where they reached the semi-finals of the Champions League beating heavyweights like Real Madrid and the Old Lady themselves.
This season, the 22-year-old slowly yet surely displaced Georginio Chiellini as the first-choice defender at Turin. The Dutch defender has played 42 times for the Serie A giants this season scoring three goals and providing one assist across all competitions.
Chelsea’s hunt for a centre-back has been going on for quite some time now. The departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen have left Chelsea extremely short of options at central defence whilst Cesar Azpilicueta’s future is also far from certain.
This could leave us with Thiago Silva and Trevoh Chalobah as the only options we have going into next season and it is not a safe way to go. Hence, reinforcements are the need of the hour for Chelsea and it might not be enough for them to sign just one player.
Levi Colwill could be an option for the Blues. The talented English centre-back impressed out on loan at Huddersfield last season and hence if Thomas Tuchel chooses to trust him, he will save Chelsea from making one signing at least for the central defence region.
