Speaking to Sky Sports, former Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater has opened up about his turbulent time at Stamford Bridge. The former midfielder was released by the club this summer, after five years with the club.
Drinkwater was a pivotal figure in Leicester City’s fairy tale title-winning campaign during the 2015/16 season. He secured a £35 million move to Chelsea in 2017, signing a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge. But he proved to be a big flop. Now he has opened up about his unhappy time at the club.
“I’m relieved, because it’s clear it wasn’t a situation that was good for me or the club. I’m angry because of how it’s gone and how I was treated – not bitter though, what ifs. It was a long time coming.”
DRINKWATER TO SKY SPORTS ABOUT HIS TIME AT CHELSEA
The former England international managed to make only 23 appearances for the Blues during his five years at the club. He spent the last three seasons on loan at different clubs including Burnley, Aston Villa, Kasimpasa and Reading. He spent last season with Championship side Reading where he made 33 league appearances, scoring one and assisting the same.
Chelsea had signed him during the last year of Antonio Conte’s stint with the club. The 32-year-old was expected to produce the same form he did with N’Golo Kante during their time together at Leicester City. But while his former team-mate excelled in the midfield and established himself as one of the best in the world, Drinkwater’s career went downhill after making the move to West London.
He last played in the Chelsea shirt in 2018. Since then he has been away on a series of loans and failed to find his form and impress the management at Chelsea. His last season spell at Reading was his last chance to impress Thomas Tuchel, but he failed in it and was released by the club this summer.
As for Chelsea, it looks like he will hardly be missed. The Blues are racked up in the midfield department with proven talented midfielders and potential up-and-coming midfielders. The West London side has players like Conte, Mateo Kovacic, Billy Gilmour and Conor Gallagher in their ranks.
The midfielder is currently a free agent. It remains to be seen which club he joins. However, Chelsea fans will hope for the best for him, despite having a vague memory of him.
