A View From The Bridge

Chelsea looking to trump Man United to La Liga star

Transfer News: Chelsea monitoring Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong

According to the Guardian, Chelsea are monitoring Manchester United’s situation with Frenkie de Jong and could jump into the race for the talented midfielder if a move to Old Trafford breaks down.

de Jong is one of the most talented midfielders in the world and a move to Manchester United is expected to take place for the Dutchman this season. However, it has now emerged that the Blues are also interested in the Barcelona man and this could set the cat among the pigeons.

De Jong joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019 and has since then had a very mixed time at Camp Nou. His performances have been top-notch for the Spanish giants but there is a feeling that he doesn’t get credit for his performances from the Blaugrana faithful.

This season has been no different for Frenkie. The 25-year-old has played 45 times for the Garnet and Blue this season scoring four goals and providing five assists across all competitions and could do much better in a better setup.

Anyone who has seen de Jong play knows that he can be the difference-maker in any midfield. He is extremely adept at passing and very good at carrying the ball forward and all these abilities make him stand out from other midfielders in the world.

He is also good at almost everything he does. He can tackle, defend, win a ball back, get into the box, provide assists and also chip in with goals. It is easy to see why any club would be interested in the Dutchman and the Blues are no different.

One thing Chelsea doesn’t have in their favour is the fact that Man United might have an advantage given the player’s earlier association with Erik ten Hag at Ajax Amsterdam. The chance to reunite with his former boss at the Theatre of Dreams could prove to be decisive.

However, one thing that the Blues can offer that the Red Devils cannot is the fact that they can give Frenkie de Jong Champions League football, something Man United don’t have. It could tilt the Dutchman to choose Stamford Bridge but it might be a far cry.

Regardless, this Frenkie de Jong story has gotten interesting with Chelsea jumping into this race. Whilst it may be too early, it is an interesting story to keep an eye out for.
