According to journalist Dean Jones (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are very much in the race for Sevilla defender Jules Kounde.
Todd Boehly will be motivated to get Chelsea’s transfer window off to a fast start because the Blues have already been in touch with a number of high-profile players.
Roman Abramovich’s restrictions caused the team to fall behind in discussions, but they are gradually making up ground and several high-profile players have been linked with moves. With Antonio Rudiger, Romelu Lukaku, and Andreas Christensen already gone, there is an acute need for a summer revamp.
Kounde was believed to be a top defensive target for Chelsea before the summer transfer window started. That has subsequently altered, allowing other teams to clearly signal their intentions. However, given that the Blues board is reluctant to give up their chase, the pendulum might swing the other way once again.
Since Marina Granovskaia left, things have been calm and focus shifted to Matthijs de Ligt, but the former transfer head wanted the French defender and should the Blues fail to land their top target, a deal for Kounde could turn into reality.
Now it is believed that Chelsea are still negotiating for Sevilla defender Jules Kounde. So the Blues are far from accepting their loss and could push to get the deal done in the coming weeks as a central defender reinforcement is highly required considering the recent departures.
Kounde may have the best chance of realising his potential on Thomas Tuchel’s squad because he can pick the brains of some of Chelsea’s more seasoned players. Chelsea desperately needs to add defensive players.
Kounde will improve if he can work with the seasoned defender Thiago Silva, who is still an important player for Chelsea at the age of 37. He is however not getting any younger and cannot be expected to start week in week out.
Jules Kounde is a very capable centre-back who has regularly performed over the previous few seasons. Despite his young age, the 23-year-old can make an immediate difference at Chelsea because he has played a significant amount of football at Spain’s top level.
There is little doubt that Kounde might play a regular role at the club given that Chelsea plays a three-back formation under Tuchel. The Blues must successfully execute this transfer as soon as possible.
