Transfer News: Emerson Palmieri insists he will be happy to stay at Chelsea
Speaking in an interview as quoted by Football.London, Chelsea loanee Emerson Palmieri insists that he will be happy to stay at Chelsea next season after returning from his loan spell.
The Italian defender joined Lyon at the start of the season on a loan move in search of regular game time and has managed to get what he desired with the Ligue 1 giants. He is set to come back to Chelsea next season before making a decision on his future.
The 27-year-old has played 37 goals for the French club this season, scoring one goal and providing two assists across all competitions. The Italian defender was linked with a move back to Chelsea in the winter transfer window due to an injury crisis at Chelsea.
Speaking about his future, Emerson Palmieri said that he will be happy to stay back at Chelsea
“I didn’t speak just yet. For me personally, it’s been a good season, I played a lot of games. Let’s see what happens in the future. I have a contract with Chelsea. I’ve played there for three years and won some things. If I need to go back there I’m happy.”
One signing less?
Marcos Alonso could leave the club this summer and return to Spain and that will open up a slot for a left-back at Chelsea.
Ben Chilwell is undoubtedly the first choice left-back for the Blues going into next season and the Englishman will be hoping to recover from his injury troubles this season.
Emerson has been at the Blues before but he struggled to get game time due to the presence of other options. However, the Italian has all that it takes to succeed at Stamford Bridge, especially as a rotation option and it remains to be seen if he is trusted.
Chelsea have a plethora of signings to make at centre-back and if they decide to trust Emerson , then they would be able to save themselves from making a signing in the transfer window. Looking for internal options makes sense for the Blues.

It remains to be seen how the Blues decide to handle the left-back situation in the summer. Trusting Emerson Palmieri seems to make sense and the Italian will be hoping he would be given that opportunity.
He is also at a point in his career where he would want regular playing time to keep making Italy’s national team squad. The presence of Cristiano Biraghi and Leonardo Spinazzola could make things tricky in that regard.
