According to the Mirror, Chelsea will demand a significant transfer fee for Romelu Lukaku if Inter Milan attempt to make a move for him in the summer transfer window.
Romelu Lukaku’s first season at Chelsea hasn’t gone as expected as the striker has failed to replicate his scintillating form in the Premier League. Having scored a mere eight goals and one assist in 26 Premier League matches, the Belgian has been underwhelming, to say the least.
On top of that, Lukaku’s controversial mid-season interview where he admitted to being open to a return to Italy has seen his status at Stamford Bridge take a hit. Now it is believed that Chelsea might agree to loan him, but they will not let him leave for cheap.
The Blues are keen to recoup £20m in loan fee followed by a £65m signing clause if any concerned team attempts to make the move permanent next summer. It should largely help us mitigate the losses after going big for him in the summer of 2021.
Inter Milan is eyeing a reunion with Lukaku and is believed to have made contact with the agent of the Belgian star. It is not known whether they would agree to pay such a high fee for a player that they sold one year back for a British record fee.
After signing Lukaku for £97.5million in the summer of 2021, Chelsea also gave him a humongous £200,000-a-week wage deal. The numbers are so staggering that even if the Blues board tries their best, they wouldn’t get a similar deal in exchange for the player after a disappointing season.
Chelsea doesn’t have a lot of firepower in the attacking contingent as Timo Werner and Kai Havertz have also failed to bag convincing numbers of goals and assists. Hence our club need a prolific striker who can lead the line without question.
Considering the aforementioned scenario it might be advantageous for our club to keep Lukaku at the club. He was one of the top strikers in the world before coming to Stamford Bridge and it is illogical to think that he has completely lost his form.
The Belgian might be able to rejuvenate his scoring powers after an extended rest. Considering it was his first campaign under Thomas Tuchel, he might have struggled to adapt to the German’s tactics. But with time, the situation can change and we might be able to see the best of him next season.
