According to Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are interested in signing Netherlands right-back Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan in the summer.
Dumfries joined Inter Milan from PSV Eindhoven in the past summer and has gone on to become one of most important players for the Nerazzurri. The Dutch right-back is extremely talented and provides a lot going forward for the team.
The 26-year-old has played 45 times for the Italian giants this season scoring five goals and providing eight assists across all competitions. Although a right wing-back, he has played mostly as a right midfielder in Simone Inzaghi’s team.
It is no secret that Chelsea star Romelu Lukaku has been linked with a return to Inter Milan in the summer and it is now being claimed that Denzel Dumfries could be used as a part of the deal to sell the Belgian to the Italian club.
Chelsea have one of the best right-backs in the world in Reece James and the English youngster is undoubtedly set to be the Blues’ main man going forward.
Signing Dumfries will undoubtedly be a huge addition to the Blues and he adds a lot of qualities that Thomas Tuchel will like. However, where he would play is a question though with two quality players set to be competing for one position.
Unless Tuchel decides to play one of them out of position on the opposite flank or choses to use Reece James in a different role like centre-back, it seems almost impossible to see both these players co-existing in the same team as it stands.
The Dutch defender is 26-years-old and would be coming in at the perfect age for the Blues. Just getting into the prime years of his career, Chelsea will be landing a player who can fit in right away and start contributing right away for the team.
It remains to be seen as to how Chelsea plan to handle the Denzel Dumfries situation and if they sign him, how they plan to handle both the players.
