Chelsea are lining up Robert Lewandowski as a backup target for Gabriel Jesus, who could be on his way to London rivals, Arsenal. According to acclaimed journalist Christian Falk, Chelsea have added Lewandowski to their shopping list and will make a move for him should they fail to land Jesus.
The Blues are in desperate need of a new striker after club-record signing Romelu Lukaku is pushing for a return to Inter Milan following an underwhelming season. Chelsea hoped to sign Jesus to solve their centre-forward woes, with Timo Werner also struggling to find the back of the net at times.
In fact, Thomas Tuchel often plays Werner out wide with attacking midfielder Kai Havertz playing in a more central role. Tuchel could use a smart centre-forward who would be an asset in possession, and Jesus ticks that list.
He also comes with the bonus point of playing in the Premier League. Though now it seems that the German tactician has an alternative plan in place.
Everyone knows what a goal-scoring machine Robert Lewandowski is, having bagged goals for fun for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. But, now it seems that he could be leaving Germany to try troubling defenders elsewhere. And London appears to be one of the places.
Lewandowski favours a move to Barcelona, but given their current economic situation, they are unable to meet Bayern’s asking price. Christian Falk also claims that Paris Saint-Germain are another option on the table for the Polish striker, with Chelsea trailing both clubs in the race to sign the Poland international.
The former Borussia Dortmund striker could fit in Tuchel’s style of play. A clinical number nine, Lewandowski can be the man to score goals on a regular basis, at least in the short term.
Although he bagged 35 goals and 4 assists in the Bundesliga in all competitions last season, his age could be a problem. While he has hardly shown signs of slowing down, he turns 34 this year and that in itself shows that he may not have very long left at the top.
Between Jesus and Lewandowski, it would be sensible for Chelsea to sign Jesus. He is a proven player in the Premier League and can also play out wide, something that the Polish would be unable to bring to the table. Add to that his age, and the Brazilian international can give us his services for a number of years down the line.
That is, of course, if the Gunners don’t manage to sign him and he makes the switch to SW6 instead. It is yet to be seen what happens, but either player could solve the problem of finding the back of the net lacking at Stamford Bridge.
