Southampton are interested in Chelsea defender Levi Colwill

According to talkSPORT (h/t Football.London), Southampton have joined the race for talented Chelsea defender Levi Colwill, who is widely expected to be sold this summer.

Colwill is one of the most talented defenders coming out of the Cobham academy in recent years and has been tipped for the very top in football. The talented centre-back has been out on loan at Huddersfield and has been extremely impressive for the Championship club.

Despite the Blues being extremely short of options at the back, it is being claimed that Colwill might be shipped out this summer with many Premier League clubs keen on the talented defensive starlet. Southampton are the latest club to join the race for the English teenager.

This season, Colwill has played 32 times for the Championship club scoring two goals and providing one assist across all competitions. His ability to play as a left-back as well is an added advantage with his versatility coming in handy on many occasions.

Chelsea have had a defensive exodus of sorts this season and more players could follow. Antonio Rudiger is a Real Madrid player now whilst Andreas Christensen is also leaving the club for certain. Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso’s futures at the club are far from certain.

As of now, there is a chance that we could go into next season with just Trevoh Chalobah and Thiago Silva as our options in central defence and that certainly cannot be the case. Chelsea will for sure make signings at centre-back in the summer transfer window.

However, until all this is done, it would be wise not to sell Levi Colwill yet. After all, the Englishman is a huge talent and could be a solution to our defensive needs in the long run.

Chelsea are seeing a huge overhaul in the back room staff ever since Todd Boehly took charge as the new owners at Stamford Bridge. The American tycoon will want to sign new centre-backs to make the team competitive ahead of next season.

It’s still not clear as to why the Blues want to sell Levi Colwill. Chelsea would be better off keeping the English starlet and it remains to be seen what they chose to do with the impressive loanee.
