According to Daily Star, Manchester United are ready to compete for Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski, who has also been linked with a move to Chelsea.
Ever since moving to the Allianz Arena from Borussia Dortmund, the Poland international has been one of the most lethal attackers in the world, regularly leading his team to the Bundesliga title with his tangible contributions in front of goal.
With only one year left on his Bayern Munich deal, United are now aiming to sign Lewandowski this summer, who is also linked with a move to Xavi’s Barcelona.
Barcelona are unlikely to be able to fund a deal for Lewandowski, which might indicate that a transfer to the Premier League is a serious possibility, providing a boost to the intentions of Chelsea and Manchester United.
Chelsea may possibly use Lewandowski as a substitute for Romelu Lukaku, with Thomas Tuchel’s team suffering for goals last season, with two cup final defeats and a third-place finish in the Premier League. But they were still in a way better position than a disjointed Man Utd.
The performances of Lewandowski for Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich speak loudly about his goal-scoring skills. However, we must first make a choice on what to do with Timo Werner and/or Romelu Lukaku. Could Tuchel pair two of them together?
Despite not playing to his full potential throughout, the Belgian still netted 15 times across all competitions last campaign, indicating that he still has the spark and may be able to rekindle his form in the coming season.
Amid such a situation it seems more logical to show trust in the Belgian striker rather than bringing in another big-name signing. The Polish striker would be a heavy name to add to the wage bill.
But if the Blues really are intent on signing him, the one advantage they hold is Champions League football. Man United cannot offer that right now and given how they were last season, things don’t look bright for them this season as well.
