Transfer Update: Lazio goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha flattered by Chelsea interest
Chelsea are lining up a move for Lazio and soon-to-be free-agent goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha, who is viewed as a potential number two to Blues’ current first-choice custodian Edouard Mendy.
The Albanian international, capped 19 times by his country, says that he is honoured to be linked to a club of Chelsea’s stature. He also mentions how playing in the Premier League has been a childhood dream for him.
Speaking to journalist Fabrizio Romano on his ‘Here We Go’ podcast, Strakosha said the following:
“I’m really honored to be linked with a top club like Chelsea, it’s a dream. I’m dreaming of Premier League since I was a kid”.
Currently fulfilling the number two role between the sticks at Chelsea is Kepa Arrizabalaga, who, by Thomas Tuchel’s own admission last month, could depart this summer in search of regular game-time.
Kepa has been very important to the club despite his reduced role, helping Chelsea to the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup glory, whilst also playing a pivotal role in the club’s Europa League success under Maurizio Sarri.
However, the Spaniard would naturally aspire of making Spain’s 23-man World Cup squad for the World Cup later this year and thus wants a move away in order to play regularly. That only makes sense, and Kepa may be better off finding a new home because Mendy’s status as Chelsea’s No 1 is insurmountable right now.
Will Strakosha be a good fit?
The 27-year-old played 31 times for Lazio last season, keeping 11 clean sheets. Those are not ground-breaking numbers but it does show that Strakosha has a safe pair of hands.
He may not have Kepa’s impact during penalties, but has what it takes to deputise for Mendy. Beyond that, what makes Strakosha a good fit is his mentality and desire.
His flattery over Chelsea’s interest shows how highly he thinks of the club and respects the institution. If he does sign for Chelsea, one can expect him to be committed. It is always a bonus if a talented player wearing our colours really understands the meaning behind being able to represent a team of Chelsea’s stature.

In this day and age, it is important to have more players who truly feel honoured to be part of a team and lesser players who want to leave the second adversity strikes. Given Strakosha’s admiration for the club and his sound nature while donning the gloves, expect him to deliver when called upon- should he sign.
