The mass exodus continues at Chelsea and this time, it’s a more familiar and beloved face amongst the Blues faithful. Petr Cech will be stepping down as Technical and Performance Advisor effective June 30, a statement on the official club website confirmed.
Cech, widely regarded as Chelsea’s greatest-ever goalkeeper, was appointed to his current role three years back by former director Marina Granovskaia to provide counsel on matters relating to football and performance.
Granovskaia joined outgoing Chairman Bruce Buck as part of Chelsea’s massive backroom reshuffle and since then, Cech’s future was up in the air too. He was expected to have showdown talks with the new co-owner, Chairman and interim Sporting Director Todd Boehly and the outcome of those discussions is now upon us.
Cech leaves Chelsea a legend both on and off the pitch. Since joining from Stade Rennais in the summer of 2004 as a part of Jose Mourinho’s revolution, Cech went on to play 493 times for the Blues whilst establishing himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
Since donning a suit, Cech has been at the centre of Chelsea’s recruitment and performance analysis and famously bore the brunt of fan protests outside Stamford Bridge during the European Super League (ESL) debacle. Sharing his thoughts on stepping away, Cech said:
“It has been a huge privilege to perform this role at Chelsea for the past three years. With the Club under new ownership, I feel now is the right time for me to step aside. I am pleased that the Club is now in an excellent position with the new owners, and I am confident of its future success both on and off the pitch.”
The reaction has been one-sided, with many fans expressing their displeasure and concern over such wholesale changes to the backroom structure.
