Fabrizio Romano: Inter Milan will announce a loan deal for Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku next week
Chelsea and Inter Milan have the paperwork ready for the transfer of Romelu Lukaku to the Serie A club on loan. The announcement of the signing will be made next week as the Belgian striker will fly to Italy for his medical and sign his contract, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.
Inter will not have an option or obligation to sign the player in the deal as it’s a straight loan. The Belgian striker will return to his former club after just one season back at Stamford Bridge following his big-money move from the Italian club.
A good deal for both parties
Lukaku’s move comes after speculation that the striker wasn’t happy at the west London club. The Blues signed him for big money after his impressive spell with Inter where he was part of their Serie A winning side.
Fans at Stamford Bridge would have hoped the 29-year-old would continue in the same vein at Chelsea when the club signed him. But the Belgian’s time in west London has been nothing short of a disappointment. The striker failed to get into the team regularly and did not have the impact fans had envisioned.
With the Belgian’s move at the final stages, Chelsea will recoup a tiny amount of money with the loan fee and get his name off their wage books, at least for now. This will certainly give the club room to manoeuvre in the transfer market for their targets.
With this, it remains to be seen whether Lukaku can replicate the form he showed when the striker was at Inter. It will be interesting to see how the Belgian is received back at the San Siro.
There has been a huge contrast in his performances in Italy and England. The 29-year-old scored 64 times in 95 appearances for the Serie A giants in his previous spell, while he’s managed only 15 goals in 44 appearances this season for the Blues.
