According to Football.London, Edouard Mendy could be offered a new deal by the new owners that will keep him at the club beyond 2025- when his current contract expires.
The Senegal international initially joined the Blues in 2020 from the French side Stade Rennais, having been offered a contract until 2025. And it now seems that the management at Chelsea is happy with his performances and wants him to stay beyond his current deal.
Mendy made a total of 49 appearances for the Blues and kept a total of 23 clean sheets. His importance to this Chelsea team is insurmountable and he has maintained the form he showed in the 2020/21 campaign, where we won the UEFA Champions League.
Mendy is currently on holiday and is expected to join the squad in Los Angeles, where Chelsea will have their pre-season tour. The Blues will spend a week there and then play matches against Club America in Las Vegas, Charlotte FC in Charlotte, and Arsenal in Orlando.
Kepa Arrizabalaga is linked with a move away from Chelsea, where he was bought as their first-choice goalkeeper but was demoted to second-choice due to poor performances. Marcus Bettinelli is a third-choice keeper that may not be the kind to be promoted if Kepa leaves.
He is a solid safety net in case both our ‘keepers are unavailable for selection and is good enough for a couple of games each season. More than that, and it becomes risky to count on him as a first-team regular.
Nathan Baxter and Jamie Cumming, who spent their last season on loans at Hull City and MK Dons respectively, are also back in the squad and could join the team in their pre-season. Chelsea might not necessarily have to buy a new number two-choice goalkeeper, but could instead promote a player from their own backyard.
Both are credible options to be Mendy’s backup. The Senegal international is currently 30 years old and has a lot to offer as he has consistently shown for both club and country.
A new deal may be on the cards for him, but neither the player nor the club should be in any hurry to wrap it up. His starting status isn’t likely to be threatened any time soon unless his performance starts to decline.
Although it will instil a lot of confidence within our fans if we get him on new terms as soon as possible. The new deal must reflect his importance for us, given he exceeded expectations from when he joined us- which warrants improved terms.
