Chelsea join Manchester United in race for Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries
There’s another name added to the list of Chelsea targets this summer. According to La Gazzetta Dello Sport (h/t Metro), Chelsea are set to challenge arch-rivals Manchester United for the signature of Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries.
The versatile defender is capable of playing in a host of positions, including the right side of midfield and his adaptability to various formations makes him a valuable prospect to consider.
New United boss Erik ten Hag knows all about his much younger compatriot, having kept a close eye on Dumfries’ development in Serie A.
Dumfries joined Inter only last summer from Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven for £11million and has gone on to impress for the Nerazzurri, making 45 appearances across all competitions. He scored 5 goals and provided 7 assists in what was a very productive campaign.
Inter are understood to be open to proposals for the Dutchman in the region of £26 million, which isn’t a roadblock price in the current transfer market.
Will Dumfries solve one of Chelsea’s many problems?
Chelsea do not have to worry about the right-wing-back role as long as Reece James is in the squad. Dumfries, should he sign, can provide a lot of value but not necessarily in defence.
He is naturally comfortable playing in midfield and if Tuchel settles for a 3-4-3 or a 3-5-2 for next season, Dumfries would likely feature in a role to the right-hand side of the anchor, which is N’Golo Kante in the majority of the games when he is fit- granted we sign the Inter star.
Dumfries can also provide cover to Reece James, and even deputise for him if and when needed. His price tag doesn’t seem outrageous either and is well within the realms of Chelsea.

The interest from United is, however, strong, and the Dutch connection between ten Hag and Dumfries could prove to be a hindrance. However, Chelsea are expected to keep challenging for silverware, while United are poised for a transitional season to steady a sinking ship.
Dumfries would also be aware that the 2022 FIFA World Cup is just on the horizon and it wouldn’t be an unreasonable demand if he wants regular playing time at whatever club he chooses to play for beyond this summer.
