According to Football.London Q&A, Chelsea target Matthijs De Ligt is not fully convinced by Juventus’ sporting project amid contract renewal talks.
Previously the Dutchman expressed his frustration with the Italian giants’ recent results. Given that his contract ends next summer, he might be available should a better club show up with an enticing proposal.
Juventus has gone two seasons without winning the Scudetto, which might be a source of frustration for the young defender. de Ligt arrived in Turin with high expectations after a large-money move from Ajax following an impressive 2018/19 UEFA Champions League run, but Juventus for all their reputation have continued to fall short in Europe.
de Ligt is believed to be in talks with Juventus over a renewal deal. But, it seems the Dutchman is not satisfied with the sporting project of the Bianconeri. If that’s the case, he might evaluate possibilities for an away move.
Chelsea are believed to be interested in De Light. However, given that the 22-year-old is under contract at Turin for another two years and has a £102 million release clause in his contract, his signing would almost certainly be costly for any concerned teams.
In terms of centre defence, Chelsea currently lacks both talent and depth. Antonio Rudiger has already joined Real Madrid whereas the Chelsea futures of Andreas Christensen, César Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso are currently hanging by a thread.
While we have choices such as Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill, and Malang Sarr in our ranks, they are not yet ready to take the reins and be regular starters. Given the result, de Ligt’s acquisition is critical, as he has extensive experience playing in the Premier League.
In the 2018-19 season, De Ligt captained an Ajax team that won the domestic double and advanced to the CL semi-finals. In his debut season in Italy, he won the Serie A title, as well as the Coppa Italia and the Italian Super Cup with the Bianconeri. Considering his mature output, he might be a great addition to our team.
It wouldn’t be a stretch to suggest that our recent success under Tuchel would be more appealing to de Ligt than staying in Italy. However, due to his expensive release clause and lengthy contract, we will have to wait and see if his move is possible.
The fact that Jules Kounde is an alternative gives us some flexibility if the club decides to drop their interest in de Ligt owing to the hefty cost. Let’s wait and watch how this situation develops in the weeks leading up to the new term.
