Jules Kounde‘s transfer saga drags on as Chelsea are still in active negotiations with Sevilla. There is still ‘work to do’ as the Blues are yet to agree on a transfer fee with the Spanish club for the French central defender, according to Goal (h/t football.london).
The West London club have supposedly agreed on personal terms with the 23-year-old, but the two clubs are still negotiating on the fee to bring the French international to the Bridge.
Kounde has been a Chelsea target for a while now, with Thomas Tuchel keen on having a good central defender at the club. Since the departures of Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger, it has become all the more important for us to strengthen this specific area of the team.
The Blues can’t count on youngsters like Trevoh Cholobah and Malang Sarr for a whole season. And while other defenders would naturally be talked about, Chelsea have their eyes set on Kounde.
The central defender has been a rock at the back for Sevilla for a couple of seasons now as the Spanish club has given clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona a decent challenge in LaLiga.
The French international came close to joining the west London club last summer, but the clubs couldn’t agree on terms for a transfer fee. With Barcelona also interested this summer, the Blues need to act quickly and decisively to ensure the signing of the 23-year-old.
Kounde will add the required quality we need, and at 23 years of age, he can possibly be a player who’ll man our backline for years to come.
Fans will hope that the issue of the fee is resolved as soon as possible. We wouldn’t want to see a repeat of last summer and perhaps miss out on a player who’s attracting interest from other big European clubs.
Kounde is a signing we need, but we’ll still have to see whether he can shine under the bright lights of the Premier League. Tuchel’s defence has been his strongest suit since he replaced Frank Lampard and it is important we give him a strong backline to challenge for titles.
