According to Daily Mail, Chelsea are set to compete with a handful of European elites to sign RB Leipzig forward Christopher Nkunku.
The offensive midfielder had a fantastic season with the Bundesliga club, scoring 35 goals and providing 20 assists in 51 games and he is a major name that the new Todd Bohely ownership might try to recruit to bolster the attacking department.
Given that Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have also been pursuing him, it won’t be simple, but the Blues would be wise to throw the kitchen sink at signing him. Considering the competition, it remains to be seen what the financial aspects of any potential deal could be.
Chelsea have struggled to identify a natural striker capable of scoring in important games. Romelu Lukaku was brought in from Inter to remedy this issue, but he has failed to live up to the hype.
Nkunku, who was awarded Bundesliga Player of the Year, would be an appealing alternative for the Blues, who have struggled offensively this season. Christian Pulisic, Timo Werner, and Hakim Ziyech have all struggled to find a regular spot in Thomas Tuchel’s lineup.
Fans would have thought that Chelsea’s priority in the summer window would be reinforcing the defence, with Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger announced to be going on free transfers.
However, the team’s attacking woes have been underlined by dismal performances up front in the second part of the season.
As a result, Lukaku has been sent to the bench by Tuchel in recent months while Kai Havertz has played out of position as a false nine on numerous occasions this season. It is now down to Chelsea on what they want to do.
They spent well to bring in Werner and Lukaku in back-to-back windows and took the bold call of selling Tammy Abraham. Do they now go out and spend big once again for the third summer in a row?
Tuchel may be enticed to sign Nkunku to lead Chelsea’s attack next season and carry his goal-scoring prowess from the Bundesliga to the Premier League. However, such a move would make way more sense if we decided to offload one of our current striking options.
