Fans on Twitter react to Chelsea confirming the sale of the club to Todd Boehly consortium
Chelsea have issued an official club statement revealing that the club’s sale to Todd Boehly’s Clearlake Capital consortium is set to be finalised by Monday.
Right after Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK government due to his connections with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, the billionaire put Chelsea up for sale and made an American private firm named ‘Raine’ in charge of the bidding process.
The Boehly consortium came out victorious from the bidding process and was pushed to the final steps of taking over the club. They also passed the Premier League’s Owners’ and Directors’ Test (OADT).
On Wednesday, the UK government approved the takeover, which took Boehly’s Clearlake Capital consortium even closer to achieving the ownership and pushed Abramovich another step back from his previous position.
Now it is believed that the Blues have reached a ‘definitive agreement’ to hand the ownership to the members of the Consortium – Clearlake Capital Group, L.P., Todd Boehly, Hansjorg Wyss and Mark Walter.
The £4.25bn deal is set to be completed by Monday, 1 day before the deadline. This would come as a massive sigh of relief to everyone associated with the Blues given the amount of uncertainty we went through in the past few months.
What next for Chelsea?
The ownership dilemma would have surely cost a fair amount. But now, the Blues would finally hope to resume their day-to-day activities with a relaxed mind once the transfer of ownership is complete.
We can certainly do with new defenders and perhaps a strong, young midfielder as N’Golo Kante and Jorginho continue to age. Each fan may have his or her own set of expectations from the owners. The important thing is that Chelsea are one step away from regaining normalcy within the club.
The situation is expected to change after the takeover finishes. However, the Blues would lose Abramovich who has been a massive reason for the club’s success in the past decade. It is still unknown whether the intentions of the new owners would align with the club’s hierarchy’s approach.
