Transfer News: Romelu Lukaku in talks with Inter Milan over a sensational return
According to popular Italian journalist Nico Shira (h/t Football.London), the entourage of Romelu Lukaku is set to hold talks with Inter Milan over a sensational return for the Belgian striker just a season after leaving them.
The 29-year-old Belgian striker returned to Chelsea from Inter Milan in the summer in a move that received a lot of anticipation and it is safe to say that things have not turned out as expected. The burly striker has not performed at the levels expected of him and has received a lot of criticism for his performances.
Injuries and Covid have not helped Lukaku’s cause this season and he has struggled to get a consistent run in Thomas Tuchel’s team. The former Manchester United striker has played 44 times for the Blues this season scoring 15 goals and providing two assists.
Whilst the numbers do not seem awful at first glance, Romelu Lukaku is capable of much more. The Belgian forward has been linked with a sensational return to Inter Milan with his entourage supposedly holding talks in the upcoming days.
Not a happy homecoming?
The return of the prodigal son was extremely hyped at the beginning of the season but it all went down too quickly for Romelu Lukaku.
Whilst he has not been helped by constant breaks in rhythms, whenever he has played, the Belgian has looked like a pale shadow of his former self who has lost his clinical touch in front of goal. Chelsea’s striking woes this season are well documented with Timo Werner also not covering himself in glory.
Adapting to life in England is not straightforward for any player but the Belgian is not new to playing in the Premier League and it is hard to imagine why the move has not worked out. Whilst it is not too late to turn around his Blues career, it remains to be seen if he stays here.
The 29-year-old continues to be linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge this summer but if he decides to stay and fight it out, the Belgian has the quality to turn it around at Chelsea. At his best, Lukaku is one of the hardest strikers for a defender to deal with.
