Transfer News: Real Madrid seeking to trump Chelsea to Caglar Soyuncu
According to Spanish outlet AS (h/t The Express), Chelsea have been handed a major headache in their pursuit of Leicester City defender Caglar Soyuncu in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The Turkish international has been a rock at the back for the Foxes in recent seasons. A physically dominant player, he also has pace to burn and has the ability to take his game up several notches. Soyuncu has not enjoyed the best of seasons this time around and could do with a change.
Chelsea, for their part, have to dip into the summer window for a centre-back to two. Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen will leave in the summer while Cesar Azpilicueta could also follow suit. This will leave the trio of Thiago Silva, Trevoh Chalobah and Malang Sarr as the three senior-most central defenders on the Blues roster.
While Silva is not getting any younger, both Chalobah and Sarr are not yet ready to take on the moniker as the club’s senior-most defensive duo. It makes it imperative for the Blues to dip into the summer market to bring in experienced alternatives.
At 26, Soyuncu is entering the prime of his career and could improve his game further under the right manager. Thomas Tuchel could certainly do with a player of the Turkish ace’s abilities but Chelsea’s task will not be easy given their current sanctions.
With the club’s ownership saga not yet done, Chelsea could be behind both Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid in the queue given that both Spanish giants. Not having the initiative could prove costly come the summer.
Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester have failed to build upon their promise and have endured a difficult season. The Foxes appear to have reached their zenith and there is little that Soyuncu can achieve if he stays put at the Kings’ Power. A move to Chelsea could however benefit both sides.

Soyuncu is not just a proven player in the Premier League but also someone who is in need of a fresh challenge. Hopefully, the Blues get the better of Real Madrid and get their man this summer.
Defence has been one of Tuchel’s strong suits since his arrival last year when he replaced Frank Lampard and the club must ensure that his squad is strengthened, not weakened this summer.
