According to foreign outlet Defensa Central (h/t Football.London), Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku has come on the transfer radar of newly-crowned La Liga champions, Real Madrid.
Lukaku’s recent form has failed to impress Thomas Tuchel, who has refused to start him on a consistent basis recently. Bagging only 5 goals and one assist in 23 appearances in the Premier League, the Belgian striker has been underwhelming on his return to England.
He has already fallen down the pecking order under Tuchel, who was happy to keep him on the bench in the Blues’ recent fixture against Everton. Lukaku was not even subbed on against his old club as the West Londoners slumped to a 1-0 loss.
Romelu Lukaku’s Chelsea future has been filled with uncertainty. Now, it is believed that Real Madrid are eyeing to end the 29-year-old striker’s misery at Chelsea by luring him to Santiago Bernabeu in the near future. With Karim Benzema not getting any younger, it does make sense for them to sign a new striker up front.
Even though Lukaku hasn’t lived up to the expectations, it is still pretty early to judge his output. It is not guaranteed that a player would flourish in all tactical systems at any given club. Lukaku was a goal machine last season at Inter Milan where he was paired alongside Lautaro Martinez.
Chelsea, however, don’t really employ a system that features two out-and-out centre-forwards. On the other hand, retrieving the £100million that Chelsea spent on Lukaku seems to be complicated at this point.
Considering his below-average performance in this term, top tier teams may not be comfortable spending an enormous amount of money on transfer fees. That automatically puts us at a disadvantage if that were to be the case.
But it might be too soon for such a risk. Lukaku can rejuvenate his form and it would be crazy to give up on him so soon after making such a big financial commitment just last summer.
There is still one month of action left, and an FA Cup final to play. The Belgian has the chance to showcase Tuchel why he deserves to start ahead of Kai Havertz and Timo Werner at number 9 and hopefully, has a good pre-season with us too.
