According to The Mirror, Juventus are ready to hold further talks with the entourage of Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba amidst interest from Chelsea.
The Frenchman has been one of the top players in the world but never quite hit his stride at Old Trafford. Due to fitness concerns, the Man United midfielders barely featured for the club this season, scoring one goal and making nine assists in 27 appearances across all competitions.
As his contract is set to expire this summer, Pogba appears set for a new challenge. The Frenchman had high hopes of securing a move to Real Madrid, but the Los Blancos have not taken a similar interest in him. Chelsea are interested but he seems to be keen to return to Italy.
Pogba’s agent, the late Mino Raiola was in charge of his transfer move. However, the super agent’s death has left Brazilian lawyer Rafaela Pimenta with a crucial task this summer. It is believed that Juventus will meet the agent today to discuss the possibility of taking the player back to Turin.
Juventus seems to be leading the race as they have offered the Frenchman a generous contract worth £8m-a-year in wages. It will also include a massive bonus package and signing-on fees. Whether it will prove to be enough remains to be seen.
Pogba has failed to showcase top-notch performances for Manchester United on a regular basis. Even though his performances for the French national team say otherwise, the 29-year-old’s spell at Old Trafford has been underwhelming.
The amount Juventus is paying makes him an expensive transfer target. Even if Chelsea persuades him to join the club, they might find it difficult to accommodate his wages, especially factoring in the signing on bonus and other clauses.
Chelsea already have three top midfielders- N’Golo Kanté, Mateo Kovačić and Jorginho in their ranks. Hence, the manager might find it challenging to accommodate Pogba into the mix.
Amid such a situation, spending huge amounts of money on Pogba doesn’t appear to be a good investment for our end. We might be better off targeting someone who is younger and can only improve in the years to come.
