Report: Boost for Chelsea in Todd Boehly’s £4.25bn takeover bid

Todd Boehly’s Chelsea takeover could be set for imminent approval by the UK government

According to The Daily Mail, Chelsea have been handed a major boost by the UK government which is ready to approve Todd Boehly’s £4.25bn takeover of the club.

As things stand, the Blues takeover could be approved as early as today with Whitehall finalizing the remaining issues concerning the change of guard. It will officially bring an end to what has been Roman Abramovich’s trophy filled era at Stamford Bridge.

A major talking point regarding the same was Abramovich’s possession of a Portuguese passport. This made it essential for the Iberian nation’s authorities to also approve the sale, leading to a delay of sorts. As things stand, British ministers are in conversation with Portuguese and European authorities to iron out any issues.

A major issue for the UK government has been what Abramovich stands to gain from the sale. The Russian oligarch has been sanctioned following Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and stands to benefit nothing from the sale.

While Abramovich has already informed the UK government that he stands to gain nothing monetarily from the sale, it has taken some time to check the veracity of these claims. This is thanks to Chelsea’s complicated ownership structure that made verification difficult.

The timing of this news could not have come sooner given that the special license the club is operating under expires on 31 May. With the FA set to nominate clubs for European participation next month, it is essential that the sale goes through as soon as possible.

End of an era at Chelsea.

The Bohely era looks set to begin at Chelsea and it will hopefully be as successful as the Abramovich one sans the controversies. Hopefully, all this will soon be behind us and we can focus on issues on the field rather than those off it.

Chelsea, despite all the off-field distractions, had a decent season that saw them win the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. They also made it to the Carabao Cup and FA Cup finals but were outdone by Liverpool on both occasions. The Blues appear to be in good hands on the field. Hopefully, that will soon be the case off it as well.

The club was well run, at least when it came to playing football and putting out elite teams, under Abramovich’s era. We won every major trophy under the sun at least once during his tenure as owner and he has left big boots to be filled.

Fans would now be hoping Boehly is the man to carry his legacy forward- or better yet, establish his own dynasty at the Bridge.
