Chelsea put end to ownership saga; new owner expected to be in the stands vs Wolves

Chelsea has confirmed that the new ownership group led by Todd Boehly has signed a purchase agreement

According to Chelsea’s official website (h/t Express), Chelsea announced that arrangements had been negotiated with the Todd Boehly group with regards to transferring the ownership of the Blues. The club was up for sale after the government had sanctioned former owner Roman Abramovich.

An official statement on the club’s official website stated that the club would be purchased by a “new ownership group” led by Todd Boehly. The club’s shares will be purchased for £2.5 billion, with the revenues going to charity and £1.75 billion for the club’s “benefit,” according to the announcement.

The statement mentioned:

“In addition, the proposed new owners will commit £1.75bn in further investment for the benefit of the Club. This includes investments in Stamford Bridge, the Academy, the Women’s Team and Kingsmeadow and continued funding for the Chelsea Foundation.”

“The sale is expected to complete in late May subject to all necessary regulatory approvals. More details will be provided at that time.”

Finally, some positive news

After a long period of uncertainty and ambiguity, the Blues’ official website has issued a statement that brings some good news to Stamford Bridge. If this transfer is made swiftly, we will be able to move on and engage in contract talks with our current players as well as partake in transfer dealings.

After being confirmed as Chelsea’s preferred bidder and agreeing to a set of “anti-Glazer” stipulations, Mr Boehly’s group signed the papers on Friday. The signing of the acquisition agreement is the most significant move thus far, even if the deal is not yet complete.

However, the government may need to first issue a Chelsea sale licence. Mr Boehly is on track to complete his purchase later this month, with only three weeks remaining on the London club’s existing operating licence.

Chelsea are expected to see a defensive exodus this summer. The futures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen remain up in the air while Marcos Alonso has himself been linked with a move away from the Bridge. Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta have just a year left on their deals and are not getting any younger.

In such a situation, the end of the ownership saga means Chelsea can now look to bring in new faces to strengthen their team. It also means that there is an end to the insecurity about the club’s future as the deal had to be completed before a certain deadline to avoid Premier League expulsion.
