“Impossible”- Tuchel’s sobering admission regarding Chelsea catching up to Liverpool and Man City

Thomas Tuchel: Chelsea won’t be able to catch Liverpool and Man City in one transfer window

According to the Evening Standard, Thomas Tuchel has admitted that the Chelsea squad will take a while to catch up to the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City. He believes it is not something that can be achieved through one good transfer window.

Since joining the team in 2021, the German has done an impressive job so far, leading the team to Champions League victory and four major cup finals in two seasons. Even though his tactics have worked positively more often than not, he hasn’t been able to garner the expected results.

Injuries have affected the team’s performance heavily in this campaign. But another problem that has had a humongous impact lately is the sanctions imposed on the club. It has affected the team’s ability to sign new players and offer contracts to available ones.

Some Chelsea players have already announced that they will be leaving the club in the summer and others could also follow suit. As things stand, the Blues are set to face an enormous challenge in the following window, and their German manager believes one good spell of recruitment will not be enough to address the gap between them and the teams at the top.

“It’s maybe impossible; I have to say, maybe impossible. They are improving their squad in every transfer window they have. It seems like we are losing key players. We are losing, of course, Toni [Rudiger]; we’re losing Andreas. So, this is tough, and we already have a gap to close.”

What can Chelsea do from here?

The sanctions and the ownership debacle certainly had an overwhelming effect on the team’s performance and are still creating problems off the field. Hence the club must fasten the process of transferring the ownership and conclude the phase as soon as possible.

As several crucial players are leaving, the Chelsea board must be quick-witted and aggressive in the summer transfer market, and they will require solid financial backing from the new owners. Signing one or two players might not be enough to regain the momentum and overtake our biggest rivals.

Tuchel appears to be right about the performance gap. Chelsea might not be able to field a title-winning team even with potential summer arrivals. It would take some time for them to replace crucial players and bring back the balance in the group. It remains to be seen how the board goes about the task.
