According to Chelsea’s official website, Thomas Tuchel discussed the idea of disseminating the Chelsea DNA to possible buyers after news broke out that the Todd Bohely group is set to take over the club’s ownership.
There has been uncertainty surrounding the club ever since Roman Abramovich announced the decision to sell the club when Russia invaded Ukraine. Since then, the government sanctions imposed on the club made life hard for everyone involved with the club.
The day-to-day functioning of the club was affected and in some cases, it even led to players questioning their future. Apparently, it played a part in making up Antonio Rudiger’s mind about Chelsea for Real Madrid, as per the Guardian.
But things seem more stable now, and Boehly was even spotted in the stands during our 2-2 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
After the game, Tuchel was asked if he had made contact with the new owners and intended to pass on his vision of Chelsea’s DNA, but the German believes it is still too early to consider such things. It was a rather defensive response as Tuchel first highlighted the ownership hasn’t become official, and that it was perhaps not in his job description to do it.
“He’s not officially the owner yet so it makes no sense to talk about ownership when the ownership is not clear. I don’t even know if this is my job, I am the coach of the team and I have enough to do. So if he wants my impression I am happy to give it but I’m not so sure that this is my job and I’m pretty sure he knows very well what Chelsea is about.”
The manager’s statements imply that it is still not confirmed that Todd Boehly’s group will own the club until it is officially disclosed, as the UK government is yet to acknowledge the purchase agreement.
But everything up until now indicates it can happen soon, otherwise it would have been a really premature step for him to attend the game against Wolves if he wasn’t confident of the takeover.
Chelsea’s DNA here seemingly doesn’t have a specific meaning. It could be what has been embedded in the club by Roman Abramovich since his takeover nearly two decades back. Or, it could mean the system, tactics, and values that have been imbibed by the club since Tuchel and his staff arrived last year.
And if the prior owner’s decision to constantly replace the manager or players is part of that DNA, it’s best if it’s not carried over to the new owners; as we could now use an owner who is patient with the players and the staff for long-term success.
