According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea star Marcos Alonso has now made leaving the Premier League a priority, with earlier speculations indicating that Barcelona was already “working” on the prospect. Alonso wishes to return to Spain.
Chelsea are willing to sell, but owing to the present state of the club, no progress has been made. The Blues have had a difficult time recently after Roman Abramovich’s assets were blocked by the government due to his links to Russian President Vladimir Putin following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine earlier this year.
Some players, like Alonso, would naturally be concerned about their futures due to the insecurity surrounding the club right now. It is even being claimed that there is a deadline of 31st May for the sale to be officially completed, as per ESPN.
It’s apparent from Fabrizio Romano’s tweet that Chelsea is at risk of losing the defender at the end of the season. It remains to be seen if this move takes place this summer, and if it does, Chelsea would have to think about how to strengthen the left-back position so they do not suffer in any situation where Ben Chilwell isn’t available.
With three goals and four assists in 25 league appearances this season, Alonso has made a promising contribution as a left-back. In the absence of Chilwell, he has contributed to Chelsea’s defence and attack.
If the deal goes through, he will follow fellow defenders Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen in potentially departing the club this summer and moving to Spain. Considering the current situation, the Blues would certainly be smart to already start thinking about a defensive rebuild.
Alonso, who had a productive spell at Fiorentina before making a name for himself in England, especially under Antonio Conte, may not be first-choice down that flank under Thomas Tuchel. And perhaps, he sees a better opportunity elsewhere.
We cannot blame Alonso for that considering the state our club has been in since Abramovich’s decision to sell the club. Kenedy was recalled from his loan at Flamengo in January while Emerson Palmieri, another left wing-back, has been out at Olympique Lyon.
We must first ensure that the ownership issue is settled in the current situation. This would enable the club to provide better contracts to current players while also allowing them to sign new players to replace those who are leaving.
But that is easier said than done. Hopefully, Blues fans see the day where we are under stable ownership once again and the focus returns to what the team is doing on the pitch. This season is yet to be over, and the club, along with Alonso, have the chance to end it with a trophy when we take on Liverpool in the FA Cup final later this month.
