According to The Sun, Leicester City are eager to sign the Torino centre-back Gleison Bremer this summer amid interest from Chelsea. With a £40 million valuation, the defender seems to be in high demand in Europe right now.
After joining Torino from Atletico Mineiro in 2018, Bremer has made a strong impression in Serie A. As he reaches the final season of his contract at Torino, the Italian club is expecting bids for the Brazilian.
He has also been linked with Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and West Ham United. Chelsea’s fight has intensified, with Leicester willing to send Torino their loanee and some cash in exchange for the centre-back. Apparently, the two clubs have even held a meeting with regards to a potential deal.
To entice Torino to part with their in-demand centre-back, Leicester have offered them on-loan midfielder Dennis Praet to sweeten the deal. Torino want Praet to come back on loan next season since they can’t afford Leicester’s £12.85 million asking price for the Belgian midfielder, who will turn 28 next week.
Chelsea need to move quickly to sign the defender because Leicester appear to be willing to go the extra mile to sign him this summer. This could be a target we are missing out on owing to the ownership crisis.
The Blues would lose Antonio Rudiger, who is likely to join Real Madrid, as well as Andreas Christensen, who is expected to join Barcelona. Bremer is a strong defender and arguably approaching the prime years of his career, making him a potential substitute for the outgoing Rudiger and a good understudy for senior star Thiago Silva.
It’s critical to crack these deals and improve the defence ahead of the expected defender exodus this summer. It can’t be said if the ownership saga had a role to play in the Blues not having made a move yet, but the sanctions imposed on us since Roman Abramovich’s decision to put the club on sale have impacted the day-to-day running at the club.
Now that the potential new owners have been formally disclosed, the club can hopefully make plans to strengthen the defence. If we are unable to sign Bremer, we must seek alternative centre-backs in order to form a solid back four next season.
Trevoh Chalobah is currently the only young centre-back that has what it takes to hack it in Tuchel’s starting XI. He alone cannot keep carrying this defence on his back for years to come and could do with some new faces alongside him- if the Englishman is trusted by Tuchel to start regularly, that is.
