According to The Sun, former Blues boss Frank Lampard is said to be keen on signing impressive Chelsea loanee Levi Colwill in the summer transfer window.
The Cobham graduate was loaned out to Huddersfield at the beginning of this season and the talented centre-back has impressed. Huddersfield find themselves in a Championship playoff final and are on the verge of securing promotion to the Premier League and Colwill has been a cornerstone of this project.
The Blues starlet has played 31 times for the Terriers this season scoring two goals and providing one assist across all competitions. Also capable of playing at left-back, Colwill’s versatility is a huge plus and this would hold him in good stead anywhere he goes.
Though Thomas Tuchel has not spoken about Colwill in specific, speaking to Football.London about loan players, the Chelsea boss admitted that experience will do them good. He also went on to add that a decision will be made on how to best use them following pre-season in the summer.
“When we give them on loan we do this for them but also for us to have better players, more experienced players back. They are our players and I want to have them in pre-season and then we decide what’s going on.”
It is absolutely no surprise anymore that Chelsea find themselves in a defensive dilemma going into next season. Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger are leaving the club on free transfers whilst club captain Cesar Azpilicueta is also said to be reconsidering his future.
This would leave the Blues with just Thiago Silva and the promising Trevoh Chalobah as options at centre-back going into the new season. There is absolutely no doubt that the Blues will have to reinforce the position in the transfer market.
Considering the promise that Colwill has shown, if he is to be trusted with a role in the first team next season, the Blues will have one lesser player to shop for in the transfer market. Although the 19-year-old is still very young, his talent has been on showcase and Tuchel could take a gamble with Colwill.
As he has shown us in the past, Tuchel has no qualms with using youngsters in his team and Colwill could follow the steps of Chalobah to get into the Blues first team. If Chelsea think he is too young though and needs more experience, then loaning him out to another Premier League club like Everton who have been credited with interest seems like a good solution.
Colwill is a player for the future. Whether he could be a player for the present depends upon his performances in the pre-season. If he manages to convince Tuchel, he could have a huge role in the first team next season.
