Fabrizio Romano: Mason Mount is set to begin talks with Chelsea over a new contract
According to the reliable Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea star Mason Mount is set to begin talks with the club over a new contract in the coming months.
The Cobham graduate broke into the Blues first team under former boss Frank Lampard and has gone on to become a huge star in the first team. The English midfielder is fresh off winning ‘Chelsea Player of the Season‘ for the second time in a row.
The 23-year-old attacking midfielder has had yet another fabulous season under Thomas Tuchel and has sometimes been leading the Chelsea team with his goals and assists this season. The Cobham graduate has scored 13 goals and provided 16 assists across all competition in 53 games this season.
Mount’s contract with Chelsea is set to expire in 2024 and the Blues are said to be keen to get the situation sorted before the start of next season. They are keen to avoid any unnecessary complications with regards to his renewal.
Not another player?
Chelsea have had enough experiences with not renewing player’s contracts and them leaving on a free transfer and they will want to be extra careful not to repeat the fiasco with someone of Mount’s pedigree.
Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger failed to renew contracts with the club and are set to leave the club on free transfers in the summer. Jorginho and N’Golo Kante have contracts expiring in 2023 and neither player has yet penned down a new deal with the club.
Whilst there is no certainty that the Englishman will want to leave a club he has been at since he was a small kid, renewing him on a long-term deal avoids any sort of confusions. Mount is destined to stay at Stamford Bridge for many years to come and that is how it should be.
The Blues are in the midst of a takeover that is about to be completed. They have been operating with special restrictions for the past few months and have been unable to open renewal talks with any of their players. Once the takeover is completed, Chelsea can return to normalcy again.
