Speaking to Premier League Productions (via the Express) as quoted by Football.London, Arsenal legend Ian Wright has urged Chelsea to sign a replacement for N’Golo Kante who often tends to get injured.
The former Leicester City midfielder joined Chelsea in 2016 and has gone on to establish himself as one of the best midfielders in the world over the past few years. However, this season has not panned out as expected for the Frenchman with the 31-year-old not putting in consistent performances like in previous seasons.
Kante has played 42 games this season scoring two goals and providing five assists across all competitions. However, only 55% of these games have come as starts with injuries not allowing the French midfielder to play with rhythm in the team.
Ian Wright feels that the talented midfielder is getting on in age and it will be wise for Chelsea to procure a replacement for him
“Kante’s starting to get a little bit of injuries, so they’re going to need to replace him”
N’Golo Kante has been a great servant to the club but it makes sense for the club to procure a backup who can take over the Frenchman in the future.
The 31-year-old’s contract with the club is bound to expire next summer and he is yet to pen down a new deal with the club. Whilst the Blues might want to renew the Frenchman and rightly so, they must bring in a young backup for Kante.
Jorginho also has his contract expiring next summer and his future at the club is also far from certain. Ruben Loftus Cheek and Ross Barkley are inconsistent at best and Mateo Kovacic for all the quality he has tends to be injured very often.
In Conor Gallagher and Billy Gilmour, Chelsea have brilliant midfield prospects. Those who have watched the Englishman play at Crystal Palace would know his capabilities to become a very good box-to-box midfielder.
Gilmour, meanwhile, looks more comfortable in a deeper role. Whether he is ready to play first-team football for Chelsea remains to be seen, after he had his ups and downs playing for a Norwich City side that ultimately got relegated this season.
It remains to be seen what happens with N’Golo Kante. However, planning for the future is always a wise idea and let’s see if Chelsea do that. Kante, regardless of what happens, will surely go down as a Chelsea legend.
