Report: Chelsea star reached agreement with Abramovich for summer exit

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta reached an agreement with Roman Abramovich for departure

According to Spanish outlet Sport via Sport Witness (h/t Football.London), Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta has been set to leave the club in the summer after reaching an agreement with owner Roman Abramovich.

Azpilicueta has been a crucial asset for Thomas Tuchel. His determination and commitment to the club make him unique and very few can match his output when it comes to consistent performances in our defence. Additionally, the Spaniard has scored three goals and given three assists in 45 appearances across all competitions this season.

Even though Cesar Azpilicueta reached a contract extension with Chelsea recently, he might not be motivated enough to continue with the team. It is believed that he is eyeing a way out and has already convinced Roman Abramovich to let him leave in the summer window.

The Blues captain now wants to reach a similar kind of agreement with Chelsea’s expected new owner Todd Boehly. It remains to be seen how the American reacts to such a proposal, but as things stand, Azpilicueta seems more out than in.

Big Blow for Chelsea?

Azpilicueta has experienced the good and bad moments with Chelsea. Having won all the major titles with the team, he has become a legend at the club. Considering his form hasn’t dropped, Chelsea could have used him for a couple more years.

However, if he is eyeing an exit, then there’s no point keeping him at the club against his will. It would not serve the best intentions of both parties; hence the Blues might be better off letting him leave even though keeping him makes a bit more sense.

Cesar Azpilicueta is the Chelsea captain.

The sanctions imposed on Chelsea might have made it even harder for the club to persuade him to stay. However, the club would hope that is a thing of the past with Todd Boehly now the club’s potential new owner.

Chelsea would be wise to look for alternatives in place of the Spaniard. Even though it would be tough to find a player with the same hunger and commitment, the Blues board must do what’s best for the club and at this moment, that seems to be letting the Spnaird leave and finding a quality reinforcement.

He is, after all, not getting any younger and that would be a name off the wage bill to bring in a young talent that offers long-term security. His versatility, nevertheless, is something the club will miss as he deputised for Reece James on occasions.

Thus, bringing in a right back to compete with James or deputise for him seems like the ideal approach to take if Azpi leaves for Barca this summer.
