According to Le Parisien via GFFN (h/t football.london), Chelsea have been handed a major transfer boost in their pursuit of Ousmane Dembele as PSG have dropped out of the race to sign him.
The 25-year-old moved to Barcelona in 2016 as they looked to replace Neymar, While Dembele has had his moments, injuries have largely limited his impact at the Nou Camp. Six years on, the Frenchman is set to be a free agent in the summer.
One team who could do with a prolific and talented winger is Chelsea. The Blues are in need of a rebuild and bringing in a player of Dembele’s ability, that too for free would be an excellent piece of business.
Chelsea are keen to rebuild their squad under the stewardship of Todd Boehly who looks set to replace Roman Abramovich as the club’s owner. Falling short on several fronts this season, it is essential that the Blues add to their roster in the summer.
Dembele at 25 is entering the prime of his career and could rekindle his potential at Stamford Bridge. He has worked under Thomas Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund and a reunion with the German could reignite his fortunes.
More so, Christian Pulisic’s future at Stamford Bridge has been called into question, meaning that a new winger will need to be brought in should the American leave. In Dembele, they more than have an able talent ready to take the Premier League by storm.
Paris Saint-Germain were also linked with the 25-year-old but have now backed out. This should give Chelsea a better shot at landing the player. The Blues are also in need of a defensive restructure and need several players added to their roster.
Landing Dembele on a free will hand the club more funds to be spent elsewhere. Whether we will take advantage of PSG’s decision and go on to make our advantage count remains to be seen.
Those that have watched Xavi Hernandez’s Barcelona would know how important Dembele has been as a creator up front. Signing a versatile, talented player who is still only 25 would be amazing business from our board, were it to happen.
