Transfer News: Chelsea are determined to stop Reece James from leaving the club
According to 90min (h/t Football.London), Chelsea have made it a priority to hand a new contract to Reece James once the new owners take charge of the club.
With six goals and seven assists in 33 appearances across all competitions, James remains one of the most effective full-backs in the world. Despite getting injured during the midseason, the Englishman made a sturdy comeback to action by putting in an awe-inspiring performance against Real Madrid.
Unfortunately for Chelsea, the 22-year-old full-back’s outstanding skills haven’t gone unnoticed by Real Madrid, who are eyeing to secure the signature of the Blues star in 2023.
Carlo Ancelotti and co. have already hurt Thomas Tuchel’s team by convincing Antonio Rudiger for a switch. Now they are eyeing taking away another crucial star from Chelsea’s squad. Hopefully, James will choose to stay put.
However, the Blues have planned to stop Los Blancos’ approach with a counter aggressive move. It is believed that Marina Granovskaia’s board is planning to give a renewal offer to Reeje James as soon as new owners come to the helm, regardless of whoever takes charge.
Can Chelsea stop Reece James from leaving?
Reece James has spent all his professional career at Chelsea. Being an academy graduate, he has formed a strong connection with the club.
Earlier, he revealed that he idolised players like Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, and John Terry, which showcases the Blues team’s influence on his professional and personal life. Leaving Stamford Bridge will end his chances of following in their footsteps.
Reece James’s father revealed in an interview that he wants to see his son wearing the armband of Chelsea one day. It reflects the goals and ambitions of the family.

Considering all the aspects, James’s priority seems to be in line with the overall growth of Chelsea. Hence, convincing such a player to move away would be hugely problematic for any team.
It seems the clubs also understand James’ emotions and want to show their commitment to the homegrown player by giving away a renewal contract. The sooner he signs the deal, the better for us, as it would stop other teams from sniffing around.
