Report: Chelsea star’s agent in London to accelerate Barcelona switch

The agent of Chelsea star Marcos Alonso is in London to accelerate his move to Barcelona

According to Mundo Deportivo (h/t Football.London), The agent of Chelsea star Marcos Alonso is in London in order to assist his client in securing a move to Barcelona.

The left-back has stepped in well for the injured Ben Chilwell this season and provided Thomas Tuchel with a dependable option in the position. The Spaniard was the only recognized left-back in the team and he stepped up when required. The 31-year-old star has bagged five goals and six assists in 46 appearances across all competitions this season.

Even though Alonso has been loyal to Chelsea for several years, his future plans and intentions have taken a turn in recent months. Now, the Spaniard is favouring a return to his home country and Barcelona has been named as the most likely destination.

Marcos Alonso is linked with an exit from Stamford Bridge.

Alonso’s agent has reached London to talk with Chelsea and accelerate the transfer process so that the Spaniard can finalise his return to Spain as soon as possible. It indicates that the 31-year-old might be highly interested in the move which decreases Blues’ chances to convince him to stay.

What should Chelsea do?

After the injury to Chilwell, Thomas Tuchel was pushed to take some uncharacteristic decisions like playing Malang Sarr and Trevoh Chalobah in the full-back positions. It didn’t have the same results, resulting in some poor performances from the team in mid-season.

As Alonso was the only recognized left-back the manager couldn’t take the risk of overusing him. He failed in his attempts to bring reinforcements in the January window through player signing or loan recall.

Marcos Alonso has been with Chelsea since 2016.

If the Spaniard leaves, the German manager would find himself in hot waters. Even if Chilwell returns, there isn’t enough backup in the squad, which puts the performance of the whole team in danger.

Considering the recent news, Chelsea might not be able to change Alonso’s decision. Hence they have to focus on other transfer targets. The summer window is approaching and once the Todd Bohely consortium takes over, the Blues would be able to target and sign players. It remains to be seen how the board reacts to the requirements of the team.
