Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s clash against Southampton tomorrow as quoted by Football London, Blues boss Thomas Tuchel has had his say on the poor form shown by star striker Romelu Lukaku.
Chelsea are coming into the game on the back of two losses, ending up on the wrong side of the result against Brentford in the Premier League last weekend and Real Madrid midweek in the Champions League. The Blues have been faltering since the international break.
One player who just hasn’t settled into the team ever since he made the move to Stamford Bridge is Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian was expected to set the stage alight when he made the move from Inter Milan to the Blues but things have not gone according to plan.
The striker had a chance to make amends and reignite his faltering Chelsea career but he ended up missing a sitter against Real Madrid that would have helped Chelsea close the two-goal deficit against Real Madrid.
Speaking about the 28-year-old’s form, Tuchel has said that the only way the speculation would die down is if Lukaku started scoring goals. Given his luck in front of goal so far, it is fair to say that such a scenario looks a million miles away.
“After the international break, we had the feeling we are all lacking shape. Romelu had one good chance and a very big chance. Nothing else helps more than goals, it would’ve been a huge moment for him.”
The Belgian was expected to be one of the star signings this season but his time at Chelsea has been anything but that. Injuries and Covid have not helped his cause, as he has struggled to get a consistent run in the team.
The Belgian international has managed a sub-par return of five goals and no assists in 20 Premier League games so far this campaign.
With Kai Havertz putting up some impressive performances in recent memory, the former Evertonian has slipped even further down the pecking order at Chelsea. With all factors combined, it remains to be seen where the future lies for Lukaku this summer.
However, the 28-year-old striker might still have a shot at redemption. Starting tomorrow, if Lukaku manages to rediscover his shooting boots, it will bode very well for the Blues in the short and long term.
Tuchel’s side will have to travel to the Bernabeu and overcome a two-goal deficit and if Lukaku manages to inspire Chelsea to do the unthinkable, then the signing of the Belgian might not seem to be as bad as it looks after all. Lukaku still has a shot at redemption. Whether he takes it remains to be seen.
