Speaking ahead of Chelsea vs Real Madrid as quoted by Football London, Thomas Tuchel has revealed that he is not concerned about the rumoured exit of Andreas Christensen.
The Danish centre-back is expected to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season with the defender being linked with a move to Barcelona. The 25-year-old has his contract expiring in the summer and he is yet to agree on a new deal despite attempts from the London based club.
The defender has made 29 appearances for Thomas Tuchel’s team. He was a mainstay at the club until a few months ago but has slowly fallen out of favour due to his contractual disagreement. The German manager has been very vocal about his desire to keep Christensen at Stamford Bridge, but the Dane’s future seems to be outside England.
Speaking about the centre-back’s potential exit in the summer, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has said there are no concerns about the Danish international.
“No concerns. Maybe it is a big more challenging for him that normal in a moment where everything is clear. But maybe he cleared his future. I don’t know it yet, but for me it is very clear when I had conversations with him last summer and through winter. The bottom line was that as long as he is my player, I will not expect anything less than 100% commitment.”
Despite the fact that the summer transfer window is still almost three months away, there is a feeling that Christensen’s chapter at Stamford Bridge might already be over.
The ex-Borussia Monchengladbach star has been one of the key players in Tuchel’s system at Chelsea and has been instrumental in making the Blues the defensive giants that they are.
The Blues find themselves in a very precarious position going into the summer, with the contracts of two of their first choice defenders expiring this summer. Apart from Christensen, Antonio Rudiger is also yet to renew his deal at the club.
The exit of Christensen may hurt Chelsea the most as he is just 25 and could have been leading the Chelsea backline in the future. He has only just reached his peak and it would be a shame to see him play out his prime years at another team.
Christensen and Rudiger’s exits could leave Chelsea very understaffed in the centre-back department. Thiago Silva, as brilliant as he has been for Chelsea, is 37 and cannot be expected to play all the games. Trevoh Chalobah has had a very impressive season under Tuchel but is still young and could do with some more experience before being a pinned starter in our line-up.
The club would, hence, need to be shrewd with their acquisitions as replacing players of this calibre can never be easy- if that’s what the Blues decide to do in the summer, to begin with. It remains to see how the new board will handle this situation but a very interesting summer lies ahead for Chelsea.
