According to the transfer guru Gianluca Di Marzio (h/t Football.London), Juventus are laying down the foundations to sign Chelsea loanee Emerson Palmieri in the summer transfer window. He is currently out on loan with Olympique Lyonnais for the rest of the season, where he has enjoyed a solid spell so far.
Emerson was sent on loan to Olympic Lyon at the start of this campaign, having fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge. Ben Chilwell and Marcos Alonso had taken the minutes from him, although the Blues could be rueing the decision they had taken. After all, Chilwell is out for this term, while Alonso has been inconsistent throughout this season.
Juve are looking to bring in a left-back to Turin at the end of this term, and they have shifted their focus towards Emerson. They have made the Italian defender their top transfer target for this summer as they look to strengthen their backline under Massimiliano Allegri.
Ideally, we would like to see the 27-year-old return to the West London side at the end of the current campaign. However, that is a distant possibility, considering how he recently revealed that he would like to stay in Ligue 1 moving forward. What’s more, Lyon also has the option to permanently sign him, which does not bode well for us.
After all, it is well known at this point how we had tried to bring the Blues loanee back in January following Chilwell’s season-ending injury. The French club did not budge in their stance, which showcases that Emerson may probably have already played his last game for us.
In such a case, the Bianconeri’s interest is of no use unless the Ligue 1 side have a change of mindset regarding Emerson’s future with them. However, since the full-back did impress in their shirt so far, we could possibly see a case where they would trigger the optional clause to sign him permanently this summer.
Then again, nothing is absolutely clear at this stage, so we will need to use how this situation would turn out to be in the coming months ahead of the summer transfer window. Should Emerson return to join up with Thomas Tuchel’s side, we should reassess our current stance, considering how Alonso has struggled with his form.
Alonso is nearing the end of his playing career, while Emerson still has a couple of years more in him right now. Moreover, it is the latter who has enjoyed a better term so far, which raises questions about our transfer business in the first place.
Now, we are playing a waiting game to see whether Lyon would activate the buy option for Emerson or not this summer. Whether a return would be in the cards for the loanee or not remains to be seen.
